Becoming an academic coach

Tutors and academic coaches provide academic support by helping students improve their study skills and gain mastery of their academic subjects.

At minimum, First Graduate tutors and academic coaches make a commitment to:

  • work with First Graduate students on a weekly (one day per week, 3:30-6:00pm) basis for one academic semester,
  • set high expectations for student learning,
  • teach and help students with academic skills,
  • teach and reinforce good study skills and habits,
  • and assess student work and performance

First Graduate assistance

To help tutors and academic coaches provide sound academic support, First Graduate provides all tutors and academic coaches with:

  • comprehensive training that covers basic teaching strategies; strategies for reinforcing study, planning, and organizational skills; and classroom management,
  • opportunities to participate in a variety of programs and activities with students,
  • and additional support and training as necessary.
