Since moving to California in 2003, Katie has been fiercely committed to expanding educational opportunities for all students, especially those from first generation and low-income backgrounds. In 2005, she lead the Kern County Cal-SOAP (California Student Opportunity and Access Program), where she learned the nuts and bolts of college access work, financial aid, and how to navigate the state’s distinctive K-12 and postsecondary systems. In 2007 Katie became a Program Officer at the College Access Foundation of California, where she lead the “Expanding Access to Financial Aid” area of work and initiated the Foundation’s student data project. Joining First Graduate in 2014, Katie has played a number of leadership roles including: establishing a new college & career success team and leading efforts to create its first logic model, integrating a major scholarship program into the existing college and career program, helping the organization get all student data on one platform, taking over operations and human resources during a time of transition, and significantly expanding compensation and benefits options for staff.
Katie began her career working for the Fulbright Scholar Program and other Public Diplomacy initiatives involving international exchanges, working closely with the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC. Along the way, she earned a master’s degree in Education Policy, Planning and Administration from the University of Maryland at College Park. Now in San Francisco, she continues her involvement with international education by serving on the advisory board of the Bay Area Fulbright Scholar Enrichment Program.B.A., James Madison University
