Volunteer Engagement Associate
Karina graduated from UC Riverside in 2015 with a double major in Psychology and Spanish Literature, becoming the first in her family to graduate from college. After completing her undergraduate studies she decided to give a year of service with City Year, an education-based non-profit that helps students stay on track towards high school graduation. She served as a tutor, mentor, and role model for students in a small but mighty school in East Harlem, New York.
After completing her first year of service, Karina returned to California to serve on the City Year Los Angeles Civic Engagement Team, where she worked with a team of eight to plan and execute 25 corporate sponsored school beautification projects (Service Days) for underfunded schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District. As the Volunteer and Communications Coordinator, she led the team’s volunteer program and managed all volunteer opportunities.
Karina shares, “Overall, these past two years of service have given me the opportunity to better understand some of the issues and inequalities that affect our communities of color. I hope that during my time with First Graduate I can collaborate with my colleagues, volunteers, and corporate partners in order to better serve our students and their families. College has opened many doors for me and my family already. My hope is that by connecting like-minded individuals to the meaningful work that FG staff is already doing we can work together to uplift FG students and their communities so that they can claim their seat at the table — a seat that they all deserve!”Psychology & Spanish Literature, UC Riverside
