All Access College Fair: Empowering First Generation Students to Navigate Higher Education
The journey to college begins with the important decision of where to apply. Figuring out which colleges to consider can be tough, especially for first-generation students. There are numerous colleges to think about, each with its own strengths and areas of focus.
Exploring college campuses in person is a rewarding experience for immersing oneself in the college environment. Still, it can be tough for students whose families haven’t gone to college before, especially if the colleges are far away.
Instead of facing the challenges of traveling to distant campuses, what if we could bring the colleges closer to home?
At a college fair, students can meet with representatives from different colleges all in one place. That is why we host the All Access College Fair every year to help our students meet with college representatives.
The All Access College Fair: Breaking Barriers and Providing Equal Opportunities
The All Access College Fair breaks barriers and provides equal opportunities for first-generation students to pursue higher education. This inclusive event aims to empower students by giving them access to resources, information, and support that may have otherwise been beyond their reach.
Emily, a high school senior, shared her thoughts on the college event: “I think this college event is good so we can learn and get more information about different schools and see which schools we can get into.”
A Networking Opportunity for Students
In addition to providing valuable information and resources, the All Access College Fair also serves as a platform for networking opportunities. Connecting with college representatives gives students a valuable touch point when applying to schools. This year, we hosted representatives from:
- Santa Clara University
- Cal State Sacramento
- UC Berkeley
- San Francisco State
- UC Merced
- University of Chicago
- University of San Francisco
- University of the Pacific
- Vassar College
- And more!
Students can connect with representatives from various institutions who understand their specific needs and can provide guidance tailored to their circumstances. And when asked about the role college fairs play in the college recruiting process, UC Berkley Representative said that “they’re absolutely important for us because it allows students to know that Berkeley is there for them, and we’re just across the Bay… We hope they always come up and talk to us… It’s a win-win situation. I get to learn more about students, and students get to learn more about Berkley.”
Help Us Continue Facilitating Programs Like This!
Jason, a high school junior, found the fair beneficial, saying that it gave him and his classmates “new opportunities, new colleges to know about it, new ideas where you want to go, how we want to live our next five years in college.”
Programs such as the All Access College Fair, which play a pivotal role in propelling our students like Jason and Emily toward their college aspirations, rely on the generous support of our donors. By contributing, you have the power to positively impact the lives and futures of our students.
