High School Choice Workshop

The High School Choice Workshop is an annual event here at First Graduate® where our 8th grade students and their families hear from a variety of public, parochial, charter and private schools in San Francisco. One of the goals of the 8th grade year is to learn how to make an informed decision about high school so that they are better able to set themselves up for academic success. This year, we had eight schools and two financial aid speakers.

Before the event, students met briefly with First Graduate® staff to brainstorm on what criteria each student would use to evaluate schools, such as the availability of different services, programs, scholarships, classes, and clubs. Students also prepared lists of questions to ask representatives from each school to gauge if the school would be a good fit for them.

All of our students and families did an amazing job of researching schools and showed up to the event organized, ready, and professional. They asked very thoughtful questions at the workshop and impressed everyone from our staff to the high school representatives.

Alumni Spotlight: Alex Lazo

Alex grew up in a struggling San Francisco community. His school had poor test scores, and Alex and the other students had to deal with racism even within the school community.
